Rocket (Arugula) Pesto

Pesto is one of those timeless ingredients that everyone knows and most people love. However, variety is the spice of life and a little change to the basic recipe for pesto could do us all a little good. Indeed, though rocket is, like basil, green and incredibly adaptable, it has its own very distinctive qualities. For instance, unlike basil, rocket has a very peppery, almost spicy, taste which gives this pesto a rather unexpected kick. In reality I’m rather loath to call this creation pesto, since its character is vastly different from what people usually assume the term to mean. If it wasn’t for the fact that the process was almost identical a more apt term for this devilish creation would surely have been tapenade. In my mind, tapenade evokes thoughts of a much stronger flavour profile than does pesto.

Coffee and Walnut Cake – The One-Year Milestone

As I recently just took some time to learn about coffee preparation and its officially a year since FrugalFeeding opened its e-pages for “business”. So, I thought I’d mark the occasion with a suitably successful and enormously delicious coffee and walnut cake. To be honest, gushing about how much I’ve loved blogging is neither British, nor is it me. So, we shall forgo such sickening pleasantries. After all, I wouldn’t want to disappoint you “yanks” by omitting both my British personality and all the frightfully offensive colloquialisms that go hand-in-hand with it. In all seriousness, I am pleasantly surprised that FrugalFeeding has proved quite so popular – it is quite a shock to me that it has made it this far. Here’s to yet another frugal year!

Walnut and Cumin Stuffed Marrow

A couple of blog posts ago I mentioned a rather large marrow that our family had recently entered into possession of. This dish is what I came up with. There seems to be little one can do with marrow, other than stuff it. To be honest, it is a rather tasteless fruit despite it being a member of the generally tasty squash family. However, it does have a great juicy quality about it which, when combined with appropriate ingredients, is rather pleasing. Indeed, in culinary terms one should consider it something of a blank canvas. I’m not sure if the Americans among us know exactly what a marrow is. Happily, I have recently been advised that it is essentially an overgrown courgette – zucchini to you defacers of the English language.

Apple and Walnut Cake with Black Treacle Icing

First off, let me dispel any bewilderment experienced on behalf of my North American readers when I use the words ‘black treacle’. The equivalent in your part of the world is molasses. The last recipe I posted that contained this dark treat caused such confusion that I had to attach a note to the bottom of the post detailing an equivalent.
