Winter Spice Biscuits with Homemade Damson Jelly

One of the problems, which has reared its ugly head as a result of my unannounced Christmas hiatus, is that there is a pile of holiday related recipes which have been, just as the resolutions will be, shut out in the cold. One cannot legitimately post a recipe for nut roast after Christmas Eve – it simply will not do. Still, this means that my stock of Christmas themed recipes will be more than healthy come December. However, with the change of year does not come a change of season; it is still winter. As such, these biscuits are an ideal way to satiate one’s Christmas hangover. After all, there is nothing quite like the hair of the dog.

Sweet Potato and Mushroom Biryani

Curry has been a mainstay of my diet for longer than I can recall. Indeed, the desire to know how to prepare a curry of my own is one of a number of things that helped nurture my love for cooking. In truth, making a good quality curry isn’t all that difficult. Though, there are a few golden rules one must adhere to if one’s curry is to impress. For instance, when making one’s own curry it is best to first toast the requisite spices, thus releasing their flavour. One must also remember to maintain a little patience, Rome was not built in a day and though your curry may be edible after 15 minutes, even one’s own mother would experience a growing sense of shame and disappointment if such a dish were to venture near her delicate taste buds. The longer a curry is cooked, the more time the flavour has to develop.

American-Style Buttermilk Pancakes

This recipe is, I’m afraid, the last in the group of those photographed whilst I was away visiting Katherine a couple of weeks ago. While this wouldn’t usually be a problem, as many of you will know, the frugal household is without a properly functioning kitchen. However, the hob and oven are now in, as is the sink. So, it is possible that I’ll be able to cook something and photograph it in the coming days, thus bringing to a close this most turbulent period in my life, in which I’ve experienced withdrawal symptoms aplenty. Seriously, I’ve not been able to actually grip anything for the past two weeks; my palms have been simply too sweaty. The less said about my recurrent heart palpitations, the better.

Pumpkin Pie

The amount of love shown for the humble pumpkin, by food bloggers, during the autumn months, is really rather impressive. My eyes have been opened completely to the sheer number of things one is able to do with a pumpkin. In fact, I’d quite happily suggest that, although I’ve played it fairly safe, there really is very little limit imposed upon one’s creative spirit when attempting to make the most of one’s vast orange fruit. Having said that, and in spite of my new found love for the pumpkin, I fear this shall be my final pumpkin based recipe of the year. The main reason for this is that fact that Frugal still doesn’t have a kitchen. By the time the kitchen has been installed Wales shall be firmly in the long, harsh grips of winter, perhaps we already are.

Pumpkin and Sage Bread

Hello, Frugalers! I have returned from a week long hiatus in Aylesbury, a large town home to both Katherine and a world famous breed of duck – there are no prizes for guessing its name. I must admit that the time spent away from work and blogging was rather welcome, though I did miss the latter considerably. Indeed, armed with the knowledge that on my return to Aberystwyth our new kitchen would not yet be installed, my girlfriend and I set about cooking all manner of treats so that I could continue to blog following my break. Fear not, faithful readers, cooking is also a favourite pastime of my wonderful woman – I was not putting the blog ahead of our relationship, I don’t think.
