Kale and Cabbage Pasta

Kale and Cabbage Pasta Recipe

Place me in a room with a brassica of your choice and I would, until surprisingly recently, have crawled up the walls and screamed for mercy and probably my mother. However, one by one my aversion to greens has fallen – broccoli was the first to go, followed by kale and now even cabbage and the infamous Brussels sprouts have spent an evening in my digestive clink. Last week, while at my local food market in Bristol, a rather good looking cabbage caught my eye and I had not the will nor the inclination to resist its pull and I’m so glad I didn’t!

Hazelnut Dukkah

Hazelnut Dukkah Recipe

Dukkah (or duqqa) is an Egyptian dish, into which one might dip bread, which generally contains a mixture of nuts, spices and occasionally herbs. For instance, my recipe contains hazelnuts, which tends to be the norm for this side-dish. However, other potential nuts that will quite happily take their place in dukkah include, but are not limited to, pistachios and cashews. Indeed, almost any nut will work well here.

Since dukkah is supremely flavourful, necessitates very little preparation and takes a surprisingly long time to disappear, even with a number of people clawing at it at once, it is perfectly suited to gatherings and dinner parties. Of course, these characteristics also make it a very effective frugal dish, a very rare trait where nuts are concerned. Still, I guess that’s the current point of my existence – to prove that one can eat well on a budget!

Mixed Berry Smoothie

mixed-berry-smoothie-recipe

That’s the New Year over and done with and despite the fact resolutions aren’t worth the mental toilet paper they are written on, it is perhaps time for something a little healthier. For those of you currently thinking along similar lines, you’ll not go far wrong with this extraordinarily frugal recipe for mixed berry smoothie.

People don’t seem to realise how inflated the prices of smoothies are these days. The leading smoothie company in the UK, which shall remain nameless, charges around £2 per 250ml drink and while the recipes they use are very tasty, you feel like you’re paying a premium to stay healthy. Fresh berries are similarly overpriced, so I highly recommend making your own smoothies and doing so with frozen berries which often cost less than half the price.

Orange and Poppy Seed Bundt Cake

Orange and Poppy Seed Bundt Cake Recipe

Happy New Year! We have entered 2013 (as I’m sure you’re aware) and FrugalFeeding has entered its third calendar year – though it has yet to reach its second birthday. Ring shaped cakes, usually known as bundt cakes, are traditionally eaten at this time of year because they symbolize the cyclical nature of the calendar. However, the New Year is also a time of frugality, a point at which all of the gluttony of Christmas should be erased (not that my previous post adheres to such a thing). As such, this particular recipe for orange and poppy seed bundt cake is perfect; not only is it circular, it refrains from outrageous decadence.

Tiramisu

Tiramisu

Tiramisu is one of my very favourite desserts – every mouthful of this creamy and ever-so-slightly naughty Italian dessert demands yet another. Nothing is left wanting if one’s tiramisu is made according to a good recipe – the coffee and rum soaked sponge fingers give it a feisty flavour and subtle texture, whilst the cream cheese, mascarpone and double cream provide copious richness. In fact, scratch my initial proposition – this is my number one dessert, not even this or any other cheesecake can touch it.
