Strawberry Jam

Homemade Strawberry Jam Recipe

The British tea scene would not be where it is today without Homemade Strawberry Jam. What other condiment would have had the audacity to fill the sandwiches, sponges and scones at the same picnic? And, what’s more, do it up and down the country, over and over again? On top of all that, it’s more frugal and far easier than you might think.

Rhubarb and Ginger Jam

Rhubarb and Ginger Jam Recipe

Running from January all the way through to the end of April the Yorkshire forced rhubarb season is one of the best things about food in the first few months of the year. More delicate and slightly sweeter than the main crop, forced rhubarb is the perfect candidate for my rhubarb and ginger jam recipe.

Mango Pickle

Mango Pickle Recipe (4)

Condiments like mango pickle or chutney play an important role in Indian cuisine, at least in Britain. It is ill-advised to spend time slaving over the stove in pursuit of a delicious curry only to forget one of the aforementioned accompaniments – the only possible outcome is disappointment. Unfortunately, good quality pickle and chutney is often rather expensive and you’re far more likely to end up spending your hard-earned money on a jar of overly sweet mango “jam” than you are an intricate and well-balanced chutney. The situation is similarly dire in the case of pickle, which can be hard to find at the best of times. Instead, it is better to find a recipe – such as the one below – and produce your own condiments. It takes a little time, patience and commitment, but the exercise is worth it in every respect.

Red Onion Chutney

Red Onion Chutney

Let’s face it, Christmas isn’t a time for giving and it certainly isn’t a time for sharing, it’s the time of the year at which everyone attempts to work out what each of their friends and family would like to receive. Therein lies my problem – it’s exceedingly difficult to buy gifts for people of whom you don’t have an in-depth understanding. As you’ll all probably know, there’s nothing more disappointing than receiving an inadequate gift, particularly when you’ve put so much time and effort into the reciprocation. As such, it seems to me that the best approach is simply not to chance it – instead, make gifts that you know your loved ones will enjoy. Besides, gifting something unwanted is tantamount to waste and as we all know… waste is exceedingly un-frugal.

Apple and Cinnamon Chutney

Apple and Cinnamon Chutney Recipe

Autumn has certainly… descended and what will follow in its footsteps is a plethora of autumnal delights. As mentioned before, our apple tree has been full of life this year and has stayed true to its promise, even though other horticultural members of our usually bountiful garden haven’t. This is more than made up for, however, as the delightfully tasty, yet devilishly spicy chutney you see before you will demonstrate. This Apple and Cinnamon Chutney is utterly scrumptious and can be enjoyed in all manner of ways, though with cheese and crackers is certainly my favourite. Don’t let the amount of chilli in this recipe put you off; if that much heat isn’t to your taste, simply alter the recipe to suit – it’ll still retain all of its flavour. Enjoy!
