Being able to identify and prepare the cheaper cuts of meat is one of the many paths to becoming truly frugal. As my tips section explains, meat is the main culprit behind the lack of frugality these days. Indeed, if you’re going to be excessively carnivorous, you may as well do it economically. Not only this, but the cheaper cuts are often the most flavoursome; lamb bread and pork hand are evidence of this. The reason for their relative lack of expense is the fact that they can often take a while to prepare or cook. Lamb breast is also considered to be too fatty by most people. However, one must remember that the cooking process has the added effect of melting most of the fat present in meat; this makes its use entirely optional.
I discovered a recipe a while ago, though I can’t remember from where, for a really simple bulgur wheat salad. The perfect opportunity to make it arose today when I realised I hadn’t soaked my split peas, with which I had intended to make a chana dahl. This dish really is incredibly simple, delicious, healthy and quick. It also contains bulgur wheat which is, at the moment, one of my favourite foods. Bulgur wheat is filling, healthy and very versatile, not to mention the fact it has a much better taste than couscous, its man-made equivalent.
Last week I embarked on my fifth attendance of a rather exquisite classical music festival somewhat obviously called Musicfest. I hadn’t intended on going, but as I found a job three days before it started which wouldn’t commence until the week after it finished, how could I say no? This has been the reason for my absence from the lovely e-folds of wordpress – if I was missed I am truly sorry. Basically what this festival entails is practising one’s instrument with particular vigour and enthusiasm every day, all day, for a week, and then performing at the end of it. As such, I’ve not had any opportunity for healthy, cheap or tasty food. This saddens me, so I no longer drink alcohol and I have reverted to the whole “my body is my temple” sort of attitude – although I would say that calling this body a temple is a rather unapt description.
